Use in drinking water:
Chickens:
- Recommended dose: 15 mg amoxicillin trihydrate/kg body weight/day, equivalent to 13.1 mg amoxicillin/kg body weight/day (corresponding to 18.8 mg of medicinal product/kg body weight/day).
- Treatment duration: 3 days or, in severe cases, 5 days.
Ducks:
- Recommended dose: 20 mg amoxicillin trihydrate/kg body weight/day, equivalent to 17.4 mg amoxicillin/kg body weight/day (corresponding to 25 mg of medicinal product/kg body weight/day).
- Treatment duration: 3 consecutive days.
Turkeys:
- Recommended dose: 15–20 mg amoxicillin trihydrate/kg body weight/day, equivalent to 13.1–17.4 mg amoxicillin/kg body weight/day (corresponding to 18.8–25 mg of medicinal product/kg body weight/day).
- Treatment duration: 3 days or, in severe cases, 5 days.
Pigs:
- Recommended dose: 20 mg amoxicillin trihydrate/kg body weight/day, equivalent to 17.4 mg amoxicillin/kg body weight/day (corresponding to 25 mg of medicinal product/kg body weight/day).
- Treatment duration: up to 5 days.
Recommendations for correct administration
Use in drinking water:
When preparing medicated water, the body weight of the animals to be treated and their actual daily water consumption must be taken into account. Water consumption may vary depending on factors such as species, age, health status, breed, and rearing conditions (e.g., different temperatures, lighting regimes). To achieve the correct dose, the amoxicillin concentration must be adjusted accordingly.
To calculate the required amount of medicinal product in mg per liter of drinking water, the following formula can be used:
(x mg medicinal product/kg body weight/day) × (average body weight [kg] of the animals to be treated) / average daily water consumption (liters) per animal = x mg medicinal product per liter of drinking water
- To ensure accurate dosing, body weight should be determined as precisely as possible to avoid underdosing.
- All animals to be treated must have sufficient access to the water supply system to ensure adequate consumption of medicated water.
- During the treatment period, animals must not have access to other water sources to guarantee the consumption of medicated water.
- Prepare the solution with fresh potable water.
- Ensure complete dissolution of the medicinal product by gently mixing until fully dissolved.
- Maintain the homogeneity of the medicated water during administration to the animals.
The maximum solubility of the medicinal product in water is 8 g/L at 20 °C and 3 g/L at 5 °C. For stock solutions and use with a dosing pump, ensure that the maximum solubility under the given conditions is not exceeded. Adjust the dosing pump flow settings based on the stock solution concentration and the water consumption of the treated animals.
Any medicated water not consumed within 24 hours must be discarded, and the medicated water should be refreshed.
Use in liquid feed (for pigs):
Administer in liquid feed to ensure 20 mg amoxicillin trihydrate/kg body weight/day, equivalent to 17.4 mg amoxicillin/kg body weight/day (corresponding to 25 mg medicinal product/kg body weight/day), for up to 5 days.
- Medicated feed must be prepared fresh at least twice daily during the treatment period.
- The daily dose is calculated based on the number of animals and their average body weight, then divided by the number of feed batches prepared daily.
- Medicated liquid feed is prepared with fresh potable water. Dissolve the required amount of medicinal product in part or all of the water needed for the liquid feed. The maximum solubility is approximately 8 g/L at 20 °C and 3 g/L at 5 °C. Ensure complete dissolution of the powder.
- The medicated water can be mixed with fully dry feed and, if necessary, with the remaining water. The system used must ensure uniform distribution of the medicated water in the animals’ feed.
- The final medicated liquid feed must be administered to pigs within a maximum of 2 hours from preparation. The stability of amoxicillin has not been determined for all commercial feed types. To minimize the loss of amoxicillin activity, the amount of medicated liquid feed prepared should not exceed what can be consumed within 2 hours.
- Medicated liquid feed must not be fermented. Any amount not consumed within 2 hours should be discarded.
- Although restricting access to other water sources would facilitate the consumption of medicated liquid feed, clean water must remain available at all times for animal welfare.
- After the administration period ends, the water supply and liquid feed systems must be properly cleaned to avoid the ingestion of subtherapeutic amounts of the active substance.
