| Dosage and method of administration | To prevent estrus, 1 ml of the product (equivalent to 50 mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate) is administered subcutaneously during anestrus, with a repeat dose after a 6-month interval. The injection should be given in a location that is not visible to avoid the potential changes in hair color or thinning appearance. For female dogs, the recommended time for administering the product to prevent estrus is 3-5 months after the last estrus. It is advisable to determine the phase of the estrous cycle either through the animal's medical history or by performing a vaginal smear before administering the product. In animals where long-term estrus prevention is desired, repeated injections of the product may lead to the onset of estrus after a variable period of time. |
| Contraindications |
It is not recommended for female dogs from which offspring are desired (those in the kennel). Progesterone stimulates the proliferation and secretory activity of the endometrium in female dogs. In female dogs treated and untreated with Depo-Promone, this response is usually temporary, but in some females, it may persist, leading to an enlarged uterus or unacceptable accumulation of mucus in the uterus, vaginal discharge, and may be associated with the development of pyometra. Thus, Depo-Promone is contraindicated in bitches in the following situations: Proestrus, estrus, or metestrus; Young females, before their first estrus; Pregnant females; History of genito-urinary conditions; Abnormal and persistent vaginal discharge; Nymphomania or abnormal estrus periods; False pregnancy; Mammary tumors that may be stimulated by progesterone activity; Other detectable abnormalities of the endocrine or reproductive system. |
